Interviews with HCPS State Champion Wrestlers

Written By Morgan Knox

Madison Birth

Madison was born into the Birth family of state champion wrestlers, but is the first female.  Now she’s the first Birth wrestler to win 3 state titles.  Her father, uncle and cousin were college wrestlers, and Madison expects to follow the family tradition after graduation and one more state title.  Madison is a two time state champion as a junior.

Cameron Stepp

Cameron is a talented 3 sport athlete. Primarily a football player, Cam was recruited to the sport because of benefits of wrestling training to lineman.  The fact that half of the lineman drafted in the 2022 NFL draft helped him to decide to commit.  To earn a state championship in only his 3rd season is a testament to his coachability and willingness to work hard. He won that state title in the Heavyweight Division

Aaron Moccia

Aaron followed in the footsteps of his older sister and brother who won multiple state youth wrestling championships.  Aaron’s always been successful in the classroom and on the mat and should make an impact on the college team that he chooses, of which there are several.

Coach John Thornton

Coach Thornton has been involved in the wrestling world for decades. As a former state champion himself, he understands the preparation and dedication that goes into the sport for the result. Now as a coach, he reflects on his career and how he helped his wrestlers get to the top.
