Advice to Other Coaches
As Woody Hayes said, “You win with People”. Surround yourself and your team with good people. Give them clear directions and let them work! Eliminate built-in excuses before games and the post-game spin. Prepare to peak when it matters with challenging practices/workouts and schedule. It is better to find out team deficiencies and how they handle perceived adversity early in the season vs in the playoffs.
Plan your practices out in detail and provide healthy competition. Always make them want to come back for more. Practice should be challenging and fun with life lessons interjected. Have team talks about drinking and decision making. Your parents will thank you a hundred times.
Advice to Parents
Let the coaches coach and don’t be afraid to say “NO”. There are a ton of opportunities now for kids but let them be kids. “Load Management” is real and Coaches often do not communicate workout schedules when playing multiple sports/teams. Allow time for recovery both mentally and physically.
Advice to Players
Control what you can control. Know that it’s not always going to be fun, but make sure to enjoy the process. Thank your parents!
