Bel Air High raises over $10k for Dig Pink

Written By Keith Watson

On Thursday, October 10, 2024 Bel Air High School held its 13th annual Dig Pink event at the school.  With the help of the generous community, the team is still tallying the final results but already know they have raised a new school record: over $10,000.  This bumps up their lifetime fundraising to more than $76,000.
Many parents, businesses, students and staff contributed to the campaign.  Megan Duvall, Gina Mannion, Margaret Brady and Heather Griger provided the essential parent leadership and involvement to help bring everything to fruition.
The “Dig Pink” tradition was started in 2010 by the Markland family when coach Tim Markland and his wife Amy Markland brought the Dig Pink campaign to Bel Air High School.  The Dig Pink national movement had started just 2 years prior.  Since their start in 2010 the Bel Air school community has now hosted 13 Dig Pink events (and 11 consecutive including an offsite event during COVID when there was no fall season in Harford County).  Bel Air has been recognized by the Side-Out Foundation for their consistent giving over the years.
Each year the fans are decked out in pink for the “Dig Pink” event.  Special events were held leading up to the night of the match and on the night of the game to raise funds for those with stage 4 metastatic breast cancer.
While it takes a lot of work from many families and businesses in the community it has always been worth it.  Knowing that they are helping families in their most desperate moments is teaching students about compassion for others.
