50 Years Ago This Month

  • For the first time ever Bel Air planned a ‘travel’ 10-12 soccer team. The team was led by perennial all stars, Terry Haggerty, Chris Kanaras and Scott McCracken, and sponsored by the Bata Shoe Company.
  • Harford Sports Hall of Famer Irv Pankey had an 88 yard pass and run for TD to propel Aberdeen past Bel Air 12-6. Aberdeen had only beaten BA once in the last 11 tries. Pankey went on to play at Penn State and 13 years with the LA Rams.
  • Harford Community College sophomore John Burdyck won the Battle of Champions Karate Tournament in Atlantic City. Burdyck won five straight matches including a triple overtime bout in the semis and a thrilling come from behind championship match with 15 seconds left,  2-1.
  • Former John Carroll running back Randy McMillan scored a touchdown with 12 seconds left to push his new team, North Harford, past the Patriots 12-7. McMillan played at HCC, Pitt and eight years for the Baltimore Colts.
  • The Aegis predicted that last year’s league runner up, North Harford, should oust the mighty Bel Air Bobkittens for the county field hockey title.  When asked about the prediction, NH’s Hall of Fame coach, Fran Matthews, responded, “ask me again at Halloween.”
