Bel Air’s football team snapped a six game losing streak by upsetting #2 ranked Calvert Hall. On a 4th and 10, from the 50 yard line, Bobcat QB Mark Smetana rolled right and threw left across the field to an open Mike Hite, who ran 45 yards for a TD, with 1:14 left in the game. With the score CHC 21 BA 20, the Bobcats opted to attempt the two point conversion for the win, and were successful.

Greg Durham of Forest Hill won the 1.67 mi COBRA sprint bicycle race coming from behind to win the race with an average speed of 20.98 mph.

John Martin and Chuck Vaught, members of the BA Cross Country team, established a new school record in a meet vs North Harford. The BA runners tied with a time of 16:29 for the 3 mile course, beating the old mark by 20 seconds.

The University of South Carolina’s QB Jeff Grantz dismantled the University of Virginia, 41-14 before 52,000. Grantz teamed up with former teammate at Bel Air Tom Amrein to amass 500 total yards. Grantz’s day was highlighted by a 77 yd touchdown pass and a 48 yard touchdown run. Grantz also averaged 45 yards per punt.

John Carroll took on Harford Community College in a first ever high school vs college field hockey match. With less than 4 minutes to play, HCC’s Liz Panos broke the 0-0 tie for the win. In a post game quote, HCC Coach Judy Bateman commented that HCC was outplayed by John Carroll and were fortunate to pull out a win.
