50 Years Ago This Month
- 20-year-old Karin Yarosh from Aberdeen became the 1st female to win a Maryland horse race in 1976. Her mount was Latin Humor. Yarosh was paid $22 for the win.
- Harford County maintained a stranglehold on wrestling’s heavyweight division winning the 4th title in a row. In 1973, Bel Air’s Billy Owen was crowned heavyweight champ. In 1974 North Harford junior Paul Glamp was crowned the best big man. In ’75 Glamp lost to Aberdeen junior Irv Pankey. Pankey won states again in 1976.
- Recently retired UCLA basketball coach John Wooden joined the Bata Shoe Company to develop a signature sneaker. The shoe featured a revolutionary polyurethane sole. Bata planned to market the shoe as “the best basketball shoe ever, designed by the best basketball coach ever.”
- Bel Air sophomore Karen Stout had a busy winter. She earned The Aegis All County basketball honors as a point guard., and led her Parks and Rec basketball team to a 13-0 league championship as coach.
- Harford Community College won the 1st Maryland JUCO Bowling Championship. Led by Sandy Thomas and Denny Zaleski, the Owls blew past Essex CC by 171 pins.
