50 Years Ago This Month
- Joppatowne beat Pocomoke 2-0 to earn their first baseball state championship on the strength of a one-hitter from pitcher Bernd Kivinski. The Mariner’s defense was exemplary. Offensively, they managed two runs on five hits. This was JT’s 2nd state title this scholastic year, matching the football team’s performance in the fall.
- Bel Air sophomore Terry Fisher narrowly missed the elusive, perfect game in the state softball finals, beating Peary HS of Montgomery Co 3-0. Young Fisher was perfect thru 7 innings but gave up her only walk, facing only 22 batters. The shutout was Fisher’s second in a row.
- Bill Blewett of the RASAC running club finished 1:22 minutes ahead of the 2nd place runner run, Wayne Vaughn of Cumberland Valley Athletic Club, to win the Gunpowder 10 mile race. Vaughn came from behind in a sprint over the last 100 years to edge Mike Sabino of the Baltimore Olympic Club, by .02 seconds.
- After a disappointing 4-23 over the last three years, Bel Air fired coach Tom Dean and replaced him with Lynn Carr. The state’s fifth largest school has gone from “Titanic to Hindenberg” in the last 3 years. Carr, 29, was a D2 All American linebacker for Shepherd College. He also served as an assistant coach at Shepherd and South Carroll HS.
- Stu Shane of Havre De Grace captured the 145 Hydroplane Class at the Maryland Cup held in Queenstown, MD. Shane’s boat, Hi Jacker, was clocked at 156mph.
