50 Years Ago This Month
- Liz Panos of Bel Air High School was named Harford County Athlete of the Year for the third time. Miss Panos was a 4 year varsity player in Field Hockey, Basketball and Softball. After carefully considering offers from several 4 year colleges, Liz decided to play three sports at Harford Community College, where she was named all JUCO in Field Hockey in the fall.
- Aberdeen’s Jerome Deal set the Harford Co record in the 100 yd dash (9.6), the 220 yd run (21.6) and the long jump (22’2″). Deal accepted a scholarship to the University of Texas, El Paso where he’d set the world record for the 60 yd dash, indoor.
- Two Harford Co athletic standouts appear on National TV (on Jan 10, 1976). Edgewood basketball standout Dudley Bradley will suit up for the Tar Heels of North Carolina, as they take on Clemson. A former Bel Air quarterback played in the Hula Bowl.
- Sho-Ri-Ryre Karate Master, Riley Hawkins of Baltimore held a self defense exhibition at the Boom Boom Lester Boxing gym on Bond St in Bel Air. Master Riley had competition wins over Chuck Norris and boxer Joe Louis.
- Former Central Consolidated athlete/coach and Bel Air High School coach Bill Brown was inducted into the Maryland Sports Hall of Fame. Mr. Brown was the 880 yd run NCAA Champion while competing for Morgan State University and became an international track star. Prior to the 1952 Olympics, Bill decided to hang up the track shoes to start a family. Ultimately he reached the highest level of success coaching champion teams in Track, Basketball and Football.
