50 Years Ago This Month
- The powers that be decided to renew the gridiron rivalry between Bel Air and John Carroll. In the five games played from 1967-1973, Bel Air owned a 5-1 advantage, with two of JC’s losses by a TD or less. Along with the schools agreeing, the Bel Air Police Dept were consulted regarding crowd control and traffic concerns
- Hickory Consolidated graduate Bill Brown, who went on to win track events at the NCAA’s at Morgan State College, was inducted into the Maryland Athletic Hall of Fame Saturday at the Baltimore Civic Center. As an athlete, Brown set NCAA records and won numerous international medals. As Coach Brown, teams at Hickory Consolidated and Bel Air High School benefitted from his expertise by winning state titles in Basketball, Cross Country, and Track.
- As the winter athletic season winds down, Aberdeen girl’s basketball players Cheryl Gittings and Carolyn Prince led the league in scoring with averages of 13.9 and 13.8 points per game, respectively.
- Forest Hill’s Dave Neville is the younger brother of one of Harford County’s all time best athletes, Al. He’s was also the area’s leading scorer in basketball for Cecil County’s West Nottingham Rams. Neville was averaging 25.8 points per game, well ahead of Edgewood Ram Ron Shelley at 17.9 points per game.
- With the Harford County Wrestling Championships on the line, Aberdeen’s Irv Pankey pinned North Harford’s Dave Stevens to give Aberdeen their county wrestling team title. This was a reversal of the ’75 championships, where Pankey lost in the finals year to North Harford’s Paul Glamp, which secured the team title for the Hawks.
