50 Years Ago This Month
- Fourteen-year-old Lisa Bullis of Chestnut Hill Road in Forest Hill recently competed in the New York State Horse Council’s 100-mile trail ride. Bullis and her 8-year-old mare, Countess Serene, won the Arabian division and placed second overall among all ages and breeds.
- Gayle Gaskill of Hickory won the State Freestyle Frisbee Championships, held in Baltimore. To claim the title, Gaskill placed in the top three in each of the eight events. As a result, she qualified for the National Championships in New York City.
- Mike Tolley and Ted Wasilewski won the Harford County Summer Tennis Championships by defeating Gene Graybeal and Charlie Walter in the finals, 6–3, 6–4.
- The Bel Air Americans edged Team Churchville, 2–1, in extra innings to claim the 11–12-year-old Harford County Baseball Championship. With the score tied 1–1 after six innings, Lawrence Bennett drew a two-out walk. The next batter, Jimmy Watters, hit a double to drive in Bennett, who beat the throw home with the winning run.
- Vicky Lynn Detamore of Churchville earned first-place honors at the North East Regional Pony Club of America Show in Cobleskill, New York.
