- Forty-six-year-old Jeff Hinte of Aberdeen ran the Vermont 100 road race in just over 19 hours, placing 20th in a field of 174 runners.
- Mary Beth Cochran of Forest Hill won the River Watch Triathlon in North East. Cochran swam three-quarters of a mile in 17:13, biked 16 miles at an average speed of 19.5 mph, and ran the 3-mile cross-country course in 21:17.
- Ten-year-old Ethan Reese of Forest Hill was the national runner-up in both Olympic styles of wrestling at the USA Wrestling National Championships. Reese and his father, 1987 University of Maryland All-American wrestler Tom Reese, traveled to Fresno, California, for the event. Young Reese surrendered a headlock in the closing seconds of the Greco-Roman finals, losing to Adam De LaGarza of Arizona. In freestyle, the other Olympic wrestling discipline, Reese avenged that loss by defeating De LaGarza, 5–3, to advance to the championship match, where he fell to Steve Luke of Michigan in overtime.
- M & M Young Guns won the 2001 Wiffle Ball Bonanza, held at Lavinsleybach Park in Level. The championship team consisted of Chad Blevins, Jason Blevins, Dan Hiser, and Mike Jackson. The Young Guns had also won the event in 2000.
- Zachary Knotts, Trystan Coomer, and Jacob Cardwell earned bronze medals at the National Junior Olympic Tae Kwon Do Championships in Tampa, Florida. More than 500 participants competed in the week-long event.
