- Chase Kalisz of Bel Air earned an Olympic silver medal in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Kalisz finished just two one-hundredths of a second behind the gold medalist from Australia.
- Seventeen-year-old Nicole Hondrogiannis was the overall women’s division winner of the Robin Hood 10K, while her mother, Ellen, won the 45–49 age group title.
- Aberdeen Swim Club’s Rocky Ramsland won his third Maryland State Diving Championship. The victory marked his 19th consecutive win.
- Ed Casey of Whiteford won the Bass Fishing Northeastern League Championship on Oneida Lake in upstate New York. Casey’s final catch of the day was a 4-pound bass that brought his tournament total to 18 pounds, 4 ounces, earning him $6,000 in prize money.
- Andrea Sipos was named Arena Club Athlete of the Year. Sipos captained the Bel Air Bobcats soccer team to the Class 4A state championship this season. She was presented with a $1,000 scholarship by club owners Kathy and Keith Rawlings.
